Using the web

The web is huge — to get you started, here are some of the popular websites people are using these days. As you explore the web, you will find your own favorite websites.

All the services here are free of cost. The commercial sites offer basic services for free, and then charge for more advanced services.
Commercial websites want you to see advertising. They want your personal information because they sell it, and they will sometimes trick you to get it.
Non-commercial websites want to share with you, and help you to share with the world. They are not there to trick you.

The main types of useful websites are: Email, Directories, File drop, Newsletters, Mail lists, and Groups , News, Questions and Answers, Search, and Social sites.

These services are very useful. But with all of them, you are putting your data — email, files, account information — out on the web where anyone can get at it. Not only yours, but all the people you are sharing or emailing with.

There are two things to think about when using website services: security, and privacy.

Just like everything else in life, when you give the power to other people to take care of things for you, you also give them power over those things! Sometimes it is worthwhile to find out if there are any alternatives. These may mean more work and responsibility for you or your group ... but also more safety and privacy!
