GPL – Richard Stallman directed the first draft of the Gnu Public License (GPL) in 1991. The newest version, GPLv3, is being drafted by Stallman with legal counsel from Eben Moglen, professor of law and history of law at Columbia University.
Free Software – Free Software is a matter of freedom, not cost. It is a
matter of liberty, not price. The word `free' in Free Software has a similar
meaning as in free speech, free people and free country and should not be
confused with its other meaning associated with zero-cost. Think of Free
Software as software which is free of encumbrances, not necessarily free of
cost.

"A nonprofit company developing ways for artists, writers and others to easily designate their work as freely shareable." "The idea is to provide licenses that allow sharing but that are also enforceable. they have developed logos and wording that will allow you to license your work or mark your work in ways that are more friendly for sharing than current copyright or simple public domain but fill some spaces in between. These options will include, non-commercial only, private use only, copyleft, attribution required, and the like."

"Free software is all about freedom - freedom of the users to run, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the software. I believe there are four kinds of freedom for the software users. I have identified four human rights. These are also rights that would define free software."

"The GNU General Public License (GPL) is one of the most widely used software licenses -- and, undoubtedly, the most misunderstood. Some of this misunderstanding comes from hostile propaganda, but some also comes from a lack of experience in licensing issues on the part of both lawyers and lay users, ..."
