I have a little experience in bulding multi-language websites in Joomla, with the great JoomFish plug-in (thanks to Yeshe Choesang la at The Tibet Post). In WordPress, there are a couple of good plug-ins, but it looks like they don't yet match up to JoomFish yet. But WordPress is working on it!
For now, it looks like WordPress MU (multiple subdomains) may be the way to go, with the WPML plugin.
It looks like the two plugin contenders are xLanguage and qTranslate
