"Programming" is writing instructions to make a computer to do something.

There are many different languages for programming. Just like human languages, you can say different things better in different languages.

PHP is a "scripting" (not compiled) language which has features that work especially for web programming.

(PHP stands for PHP Hypertext Preprocessor, which doesn't really mean much of anything – it was just made up to answer the question "what does PHP stand for?"!!)

Since PHP is intended to be used through the web, you need a web server such as apache installed on your machine to practice it.
