TextEdit comes with Mac OSX. It is not really a text editor – it puts hidden stuff in the file.
To make it act as a text editor:
Preferences →
Now it works, but i am suspecting it puts doctype etc in the file.
TextWrangler is a free text editor from BareBones. It seems to be possible as a real text editor. http://www.barebones.com/products/textwrangler/
Other text editors, they all cost, and are pretty heavy.
