There is no perfect solution to showing Tibetan
in your web pages. Here are the ones we know
of so far.
Use font that is on your computer
Type your Tibetan text in your word processor,
such as MSWord or PageMaker, then paste into your
html.
Make your stylesheet call for the font you used.
Provide a link on your page(s) so people can
download the font.
-
Good:
Works in all browsers/operating systems
that the font supports.
-
Bad:
Doesn't work in all browsers and operating systems.
People have to download the font if they don't have it.
They may not understand how to do this.
Make your Tibetan pages as PDF files:
Make your web pages with Tibetan text in your word processor,
such as MSWord or PageMaker, then convert into PDF.
-
Good:
Works in all browsers/operating systems
Everyone can see the Tibetan exactly as you want it to appear.
-
Bad:
People have to download the PDF viewer (Acrobat Reader)
if they don't have it.
They may not understand how to do this.
PDF files can be slow to download.
The program that makes PDF files may be expensive
or difficult to get.
Embed the font into your web pages with the WEFT program
(Web Embedded Font Technology):
Type your Tibetan text in your word processor,
such as MSWord or PageMaker, then paste into your
html.
Make your stylesheet call for the font you used.
Use the WEFT program to make an eot file
that will give the font to the user when they view your page.
Paste the javascript and font code into each web page.
-
Good:
Your web page can be seen in Tibetan easily.
Nothing for the user to download.
-
Bad:
Only works in MSIE on MSWindows.
It's a little tricky to understand how to use the
WEFT program.
Use Windows Vista - Tibetan version
Type your Tibetan text in your word processor,
such as MSWord or PageMaker, then paste into your
html.
Make your stylesheet call for the font you used.
People who are also using Windows Tibetan Vista
will see your pages in Tibetan.
-
Good:
People who are also using Windows Tibetan Vista
will see your pages in Tibetan.
-
Bad:
Only works in Windows Tibetan Vista.
Windows Vista is very expensive.
Windows Vista requires an expensive computer to run.
The Tibetan PRC font used in Windows Vista is made
and supported by the Chinese government.
The agreement with MicroSoft stipulates that MicroSoft
must not use any other Tibetan font.
Convince the browser and operating system programmers
to include Tibetan Unicode in their programs
When they do this, then:
Using a Unicode font, you can type your Tibetan text in your word processor,
such as MSWord or PageMaker, then paste into your
html.
Make your stylesheet call for the font you used.
And just like Chinese or Hindi, Tibetan will display.
-
Good:
Works in all browsers/operating systems
that the font supports.
-
Bad:
It isn't happening yet. Why?
The programmers don't know you want this.
Tell them!
