Other happenings:

  • Sundays are "workshop day". We are sure to be open all day for people to drop by and share. From 2pm to 4pm we have a more formal workshop on whatever we are interested in that week.
  • We've given away a lot of flash drives.
  • Lhagayal Tsering, computer teacher at TCV (Tibetan Children's Village school), is in charge of lending laptops to students for learning web pages and programming.
  • On weekends some students (Class X through XII) come down from TCV to the office to learn web development and linux.
  • We have downloaded the full PCLinuxOS repository, and full driver packages and Windows XP updates, to give to people so they can save internet connection costs.
  • LW office is available for anyone who wants to use internet, have meetings, learn web development and programming.
  • LW and i have been able to do all our work so much more easily and smoothly with this room, sufficient equipment, and peace of mind about the rent. People are in the office daily, for learning, teaching, sharing, using computers and internet. This is the way things should be!

Tibetan Music Festival

February 2008 — Two laptops traveled by bus, plane and private car to Bylakuppe Tibetan settlement in South India, where Gonpo Gyaltsen had invited Lobsang Wangyal to take part in his annual Tibetan Music Festival.

Even though internet connection in Bylakuppe is almost non-existent, Lobsang and James were able to write and post a news story the day after the event thanks to the laptops and the mobile internet — a benefit to the worldwide dispersed Tibetan community.

Gonjang Monastery

November 2007 — Two laptops traveled by bus, plane and jeep to Gonjang Monastery, (about 6 miles north of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim). There Ogyen and James worked almost non-stop for two weeks, developing websites and sharing information both web and non-web. It was like a geek holiday — and so enjoyable after a year of trying to share information online only, and with Ogyen struggling on an old, almost-dying desktop pc.
